Thus spoke Michael Tilson Thomas, Musical Director of San Francisco Symphony, on the occasion of Carnegie Hall’s opening night in September 2008, which launched their festival “Bernstein: The Best Of All Possible Worlds”.
This special DVD is a joyous recording of this sold-out gala event taped live at Carnegie Hall on September 24, 2008 and features the songs and music of Leonard Bernstein.
Michael Tilson Thomas leads the San Francisco Symphony with special guest soloists Christine Ebersole, Thomas Hampson, Yo-Yo Ma, Dawn Upshaw and drama and vocal students from The Juilliard School.
Recorded in 5.1 surround sound, the concert features selections from West Side Story, A Quiet Place, On The Town, Mass, Trouble In Tahiti, Songfest and Fancy Free including a stirring vocal performance from Michael Tilson Thomas himself in the rousing finale in “Ya Got Me” from On The Town.
A Celebration of Leonard Bernstein: Carnegie Hall Opening Night 2008 inaugurated the hall’s 118th season and is a production of Carnegie Hall and Thirteen/WNET New York in association with the San Francisco Symphony.
The DVD also includes interviews by Michael Tilson Thomas with soloists Thomas Hampson, Yo-Yo Ma, Dawn Upshaw and Bernstein’s own daughter, Jamie Bernstein.
