Biography:

Pianist Marisa Gupta has built a wide-ranging musical life as a soloist and chamber musician, with a particular affinity for neglected repertoire and the music of our time. Born in the US to Thai and Indian parents, she made her concerto debut with the Houston Symphony performing Prokofiev’s First Piano Concerto.

She has appeared at venues including Wigmore Hall, the Concertgebouw, Palau de la Música Catalana, Southbank Centre, LSO St Luke’s, Warsaw Philharmonic Hall, the Romanian Athenaeum, Tokyo Opera City, LACMA and Zipper Hall in Los Angeles. Festival appearances include Ravinia, Rockport, Prussia Cove, Yellow Barn and the Three Choirs Festival. Her performances have been broadcast by BBC Radio 3, BBC television, Radio Catalunya, KUSC and other international broadcasters.

A committed advocate for contemporary music, she has worked closely with composers including Jörg Widmann, Brett Dean and Philippe Hersant, and has given premieres of music by Hersant, Jean-Frédéric Neuburger, Aaron Jay Kernis, Ned Rorem and Marc Migó Cortés. Her chamber music collaborators have included Anthony Marwood, Philippe Graffin, Stephen Kovacevich, Geneva Lewis and musicians from many leading orchestras and ensembles.

A Fulbright Scholar and Edison Visiting Fellow at the British Library, Marisa’s research has focused on historical recordings and performance practice. She was also a prizewinner at the Maria Canals and Viotti competitions. Marisa holds the Diplôme de Soliste from the Haute école de musique de Genève, where she studied with Pascal Devoyon, and a doctorate from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama devoted to the music of Frederic Mompou. Her mentors have included Richard Goode, Horacio Gutierrez, and John and Nancy Weems. She has served on the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin and has given masterclasses and lectures at institutions including the Colburn School, Guildhall School of Music & Drama, Kunstuniversität Graz and the Longy School of Music.
